Big business spends millions in advertising dollars every year convincing the American public that (simply) there are drugs that are acceptable and drugs that are not. Although both have terrible side-effects and are leading killers, alcohol and tobacco are legal and even promoted on television. Same with prescription drugs. Marijuana is a non-toxic medicine but is illegal while vioxx has killed thousands, is legal and has killed more then marijuana ever has.
Lunesta depicts a male unable to sleep thinking (internally):
“I’ve got to remember that appointment tomorrow? Did I send the car payment? What made me volunteer for that assignment?” Then the narrator of the commercial breaks in stating “introducing Lunesta, a sleep aid that can give you and your restless mind the sleep you need.” Another commercial states; “You often feel distracted, disorganized, restless, unable to finish things, like the channel keeps changing in your mind and you can’t control the remote. If you’ve felt these symptoms your whole life you may have adult ADD.”

Constantly thinking about something else or being unable to turn off your brain is what it was designed to do. It’s not a neurological imbalance but condition due to neglect. Our society is so fast paced it is amazing what we fit into a day. Most people are unable to shut off their brains at night or have a constantly racing mind because they never dedicate a sufficient amount of time to meditation, yoga, or spirituality. Our species, mainly due to our way of life and society, have become doers and have forgotten how to simply be. If there is a rise in anxiety and hyperactivity in this culture we must never rule out the possibility that these issues stem from the societal structure we have created and not personal faults.
The fact is that American culture has programed individuals to have a preconceived notion on drugs based simply on public acceptance, not scientific fact, medical purpose, or industrial value. As one can read in the related posts below the real irony of the situation is America has become accustomed to trusting drugs provided by the pharmaceutical companies although they are only concerned with pleasing stockholders and getting consumers to buy their product--which is why they now advertise directly to the consumer. Concurrently, a naturally growing plant which has non-toxic medical properties, is a cash crop, an industrial asset, and was grown by the founding fathers, marijuana... is illegal because of propaganda campaigns. The acceptance and/or illegality of drugs in America makes (absolutely) no sense.
